Hair, Skin, and Makeup Tips for Spring

This time of year we don’t always know what to expect. Temperatures fluctuate daily. One day feels like spring, the next it’s snowing in April. One thing we know is that spring will arrive, and all of nature (including all of us) will need to transition from the dry of winter to the blooms of spring. Nature innately transitions on its own but truth be told, we, especially our skin and hair, need a little assistance.
As a professional hair and makeup artist, I constantly look at upcoming trends and test new products and techniques. I love sharing my insights and tips for an easy transition into spring and summer and trends to make the seasonal transition effortless.
One of the biggest trends in skin is clean beauty, and we are lucky to have some amazing clean beauty brands right in our own backyards.
Healthy Hair
Starting at the top, it begins at the scalp. Beautiful hair starts with a healthy scalp. Have you ever thought about what your scalp skin type is? Dry, oily, or in between? Determining this can help you discover what types of products to use and how often you use them.
Do you have a flaky scalp? If so, try local clean beauty brand Odele’s Scalp + Body Scrub on your scalp to exfoliate. Don’t stop at the scalp if elbows and knees need a little sloughing, too. Does your scalp need a little TLC? Odele’s Rejuvenating Scalp Serum will nourish and moisturize for thicker, healthier-looking hair
TIP: To keep your hair healthy, remember to use shampoo on your scalp and conditioner on your hair, starting at the ends. If you are using a lot of styling products, use a clarifying shampoo at least once a month.
Don’t stop there! The rest of your skin needs pampering after a long, cold winter. Local certified organic skincare brand IN (formally Intelligent Nutrients) has a Skin Essentials Duo that includes their Regenerative Skin Serum and Regenerative Rich Cream to hydrate and plump parched winter skin.
IN’s Liquid Green oils (one for the face, another for the body)
Simplified Skincare
Simplifying your skincare routine is also a hot trend—I mean, does anyone really need 10 steps twice a day? If you want to keep it simple check out IN’s legendary Liquid Green oils (one for the face, another for the body). The facial oil reduces redness as it plumps and firms the skin. I also use it to remove makeup on dry skin to leave skin feeling hydrated.
Minimalist Statement Makeup
I consider makeup the icing on the cake, even as a makeup artist. If the skin isn’t in good shape, the icing can lookun even and like a cover-up. To ensure your makeup simply accentuates your best features, minimal makeup is key. Plus, it’s trending for spring. Pick your best feature and play it up while giving the rest of the face a beautiful goddess glow.
Fully rimmed eyes will make a statement this year, and luckily it’s a lot easier to perfect than the winged liquid liner of years past. This is a simple makeup application using an eye pencil. Try local beauty brand Sigma’s Wicked Long Wear Eyeliner Pencil at the waterline. First, dry the waterline with a Q-tip to ensure a long-lasting application, and smudge it along the upper lash line and at the inner and outer corners of the eye. It’s a fresh take on a nostalgic 90’s grunge-era trend. Pair this with flawless skin, a groomed brow, and a perfect pout and you have a timeless look that can go from day to night.
The best part of makeup is that it’s easy to remove, so try something new, and experiment... you may find something you never expected. Ultimately the most important trend isthe one you feel most comfortable and beautiful wearing
The eyeliner trend is best seen here, in Fatima’s latest makeup looks created on set for the Eleanor Leftwich Spring/Summer 2025 Collection. Eleanor Leftwich is a Minnesota-based, women-owned brand that champions the multi-hyphenate woman, one exceptional outfit at a time.
